5 Things We Need To Know Before Designing Your Website

Are you thinking that you need a new website? Creating a website for your business is a process. It takes time and effort. We do it all the time so there are certain things that we can help you get together before we even start work on your site. Here's 5 things that you need to make a start.

1. Domain name

Do you own your domain name? If you’re starting a new business the first step is deciding on the name. While you’re deciding it’s important to remember that you’ll need to buy the appropriate domain name. So make sure you check it’s available. You can find out more from our blog post dedicated to domain names.

It’s not something we do for clients because we like them to maintain control. Providers like GoDaddy allow us third party access to do what we need to do without getting mixed up in ownership or sharing private login details.

2. Brand

Does your business brand exist already? And do you want to keep it the same? Our website design process always starts with mockups of how the website will look. We need to know whether we’re starting from scratch or whether it should be based on an existing look. There will be different costs associated with each so it’s important we know up front before we create your proposal.

3. What do you want your website to do?

Is it simply a means for people to find and contact you, will you be selling products on it or is it a resource for people to access information stored in a database? Each of these are very different and have very different price tags attached.

4. Are you providing the text and images?

Copywriting and photography are crucial to the success of your website. Perhaps you feel you have the skills required. If not we can provide you with help. It may be that you just need some text edited to make it right for a web audience or it may be that you need the whole thing written. We can make minor adjustments to photographs supplied by you but maybe your site would look better if we put you in touch with a photographer for some bespoke shots.

5. What is your budget?

At the start of the web design process we always prepare a full proposal. This breaks down exactly what we plan to provide and at what cost. It helps us both to understand what’s happening and is the basis of the contract between us. It’s important before we start to know what sort of figure you have in mind and how much you want to spend on a website. We will tell you before we spend time on a proposal whether we will be able to help you for that amount. If we go ahead with the proposal we will try to stick to your budget and make suggestions for what you may need or may not need according to your restrictions.

There's a long way to go but speak to us and we'll guide you through the rest of the process.
